Background of the Study
Digital communication has redefined pragmatic practices by integrating multimodal elements that extend beyond traditional language. In Nigeria, platforms such as Facebook and TikTok offer distinct environments for pragmatic expression. Facebook, with its extended textual posts and comments, allows users to employ conventional politeness strategies, indirectness, and emotive punctuation to manage interpersonal relations. In contrast, TikTok’s video‐based format encourages users to combine visual cues, gestures, and vocal intonation to convey nuanced pragmatic messages (Ibrahim, 2023). This study compares the pragmatic strategies used on these platforms, investigating how contextual affordances shape communication practices. The research explores how users negotiate meaning, express attitudes, and manage face in digital interactions, highlighting the role of cultural context in shaping pragmatic behavior. By analyzing examples from Facebook and TikTok, the study aims to reveal how digital media transform pragmatic norms and contribute to evolving models of interpersonal communication in Nigeria (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although digital pragmatics is a growing field, there is limited comparative research on how different social media platforms influence pragmatic strategies in Nigeria. Existing studies often focus on text‐based communication without addressing the multimodal nature of platforms like TikTok. This gap restricts our understanding of how digital affordances affect meaning negotiation and social interaction. The current study addresses this deficiency by comparing pragmatic practices on Facebook and TikTok, providing insights into the diverse ways Nigerians manage interpersonal communication in different digital contexts (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To compare pragmatic strategies on Facebook and TikTok in Nigeria.
To assess the role of multimodal elements in shaping pragmatics.
To develop a model for digital pragmatic communication.
Research Questions:
What pragmatic strategies are employed on Facebook and TikTok?
How do multimodal cues affect meaning negotiation?
What cultural factors influence these digital pragmatic practices?
Significance of the Study
This study contributes to our understanding of digital pragmatics by offering a comparative analysis of communication on Facebook and TikTok. Its findings inform theories of multimodal communication and guide practitioners in developing effective digital communication strategies (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
